March 2007, The Video Lab in Johannesburg, South Africa, took delivery of the first ever ARRILASER Film Recorder in Africa. The recorder was installed by Brady Stone, Digital Service Engineer, ARRI (GB), and became the 207th ARRILASER worldwide. Tracey Williams from the Video Lab says:

“The Video Lab has been involved in film recording for many years. We started with a Solitaire Cine 111. In 1997 we installed a Kodak lightning 11 film recorder. This has served us well since then. In recent years there has been huge pressure to upgrade our machine. The ARRI seemed to be the only option. It keeps us up there internationally with all leading DI, film vfx and film recording houses. It is a huge advantage to our local market to be able to output the best possible product here locally in SA. SA has a relatively large cinema commercial market that will benefit hugely from the quality and fast turn around. Film-outs from the ARRI also reduce additional spend and time at the labs. We have waited for this for a long time, and are thrilled to have it installed at the Video Lab”

3 x 8 is Real Time Scanning

At NAB 2007, ARRI showcased the Digital Dailies Base Package, which scans at 8 frames per second in 2K resolution single exposure, and 5 frames per second in 2K resolution double exposure. The package also includes:

  • Image Preview while winding -> `fast view’
  • Frameline Detection
  • Flash Detection
  • New Customized Optics
  • New LEDs (higher intensity)

The ARRISCAN's are controlled by a single job database (central job management) and all the 3 ARRISCANs are scanning 35mm reels by keycode.

The speed of nearly eight frames per second is achieved for HD (1920 pixels per line) or 2k (2048 pixels per line) resolution. The ARRISCAN becomes a very attractive alternative to a HD/2K telecine in a datacentric workflow. A bundle of three scanners will cost less than current real-time scanners while offering significant advantages.

  • Pin-registered scanning
  • Perfect colour reproducibility due to closed loop LED illumination
  • Double Redundancy

The application ranges from creating digital rushes in HD to ultra-fast scanning for DI productions. "Creating rushes with the same film scanner that is used for the high-resolution scans creates a wealth of options for the post-production”, explains the Head of Application Engineering at ARRI, Harald Brendel. “Having rushes that match the hi-res scans in colour and geometry provides the possibility to use them not only for editing but for visual effect lay-outs and early colour grading as well."

Clients will have the choice to use the ARRISCAN in the way they want to:

  • High End Digital Intermediate work
  • 6K, 4K, 2K resolution
  • Double flash mode for full dynamic range
  • Kodak Digital ICE technology for dust & scratch removal
  • 4 fps in 3K, 2K (oversampled) resolution
  • 1 fps in 6K, 4K (oversampled) resolution
  • Digital Dailies work or Digital Intermediate work
  • HD or 2K resolution
  • Single flash mode
  • 8 fps in 2K, HD (oversampled)
