May 2004 saw the first ARRI three day Lighting Course which took place at ARRI (GB) headquarters in Uxbridge just outside London run by David Lock and Bill Curtis.

Bill Curtis left Ravensbourne College Short Course Unit to further develop courses for professionals in the film and television industry with his company Bill Curtis Associates. David Lock was formerly a Lighting Director for the BBC on a wide variety of shows, from Eastenders to Top of the Pop’s, before leaving to go freelance. Whilst at the BBC he had already lectured on lighting for the BBC training at Wood Norton.
The three-day course has been developed to provide training in current industry practice and with ARRI has found a partner that can offer an unparalleled level of support. With the latest equipment in lighting, cameras and grip, ARRI are able to provide a great training environment.
The courses are aimed at those in the industry wishing to specialise or improve their understanding of basic lighting theory and practice. The three-day course is an intensive hands-on experience that puts emphasis on good, practical lighting for the film, television and creative industries.
Fundamental lighting theory is backed up with ‘hands-on’ exercises including location shoots and a complex mixed lighting scenario. Some exercises are recorded giving delegates the opportunity to analyse their work. Recent clients include the BBC, Walt Disney Productions, ITV, CTV, ITN, Ulster TV, London Stock Exchange, MoD tri-services and freelancers.
During the three days time is allowed to tour the facilities, in particular the rental companies ARRI Lighting Rental and ARRI MEDIA. Allan Fyfe, from the Camera Sales Department gives a fascinating and informative talk on the history of the organisation and the development of ARRI film cameras from 1917 to the present day.
Courses are run for 4-6 delegates. In written feedback, Craig Dockerill, Lighting Director for ITN wrote: “this has been a really informative and enjoyable course, I wanted it to go on and on to gain even more knowledge. The tour was a real eye opener and gave a good insight to what ARRI is all about”. ITN Lighting Director Richard Evans concluded, “an excellent course, very formative, I thoroughly enjoyed it”.
For those wishing to take their lighting knowledge a significant stage further, Bill Curtis Associates also run a 10-day lighting course with support from ARRI (GB) at various studio locations around the UK.
