May saw the first ARRI three day Lighting Course, which took place at ARRI (GB) headquarters in Uxbridge just outside London, run by David Lock and Bill Curtis. Bill Curtis left Ravensbourne College Short Course Unit to further develop courses for professionals in the film and television industry with his company Bill Curtis Associates. David Lock was formerly a Lighting Director for the BBC on a wide variety of shows, from EASTENDERS to TOP OF THE POP’s, before leaving to go freelance. At the BBC he already lectured on Lighting for BBC training at Wood Norton Hall.

The three-day course has been developed over the years and with ARRI has now found a partner that can offer an unparalleled level of support. Providing the latest equipment both in lighting and cameras, the course delegates were able to work in a great training environment.

The course is certificated and aimed at those who are in the industry, wishing to specialise or improve their understanding of basic lighting theory and practice. It is an intensive hands-on course, the emphasis being on good practical lighting for the film, television and creative industries. Fundamental lighting theory is backed up with practical exercises including location shoots and a mixed lighting shoot. Some exercises are recorded giving the delegates the opportunity to analyse their own work. Recent clients include the BBC, Disney, ITV, CTV, ITN, Ulster TV, London Stock Exchange, Ministry of Defence tri-services and freelancers.

During the three days, time was allowed to tour the facilities, in particular the rental companies, ARRI Lighting Rental and ARRI MEDIA. Allan Fyfe, from the Film Equipment Sales Department gave a fascinating and informative talk on the history of the organisation and development of ARRI film cameras from 1917 to the present day.

The course, normally for between four to six delegates, on this launch occasion totalled seven. In written feedback, Craig Dockerill, Lighting Director for ITN, wrote: “this has been a really informative and enjoyable course, I wanted it to go on and on to gain even more knowledge. The tour was a real eye opener and gave a good insight to what ARRI is all about”. ITN Lighting Director Richard Evans concluded, “excellent course, very informative, I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

A 3-day course for 4-8 delegates

This is a course for anyone working in corporate or broadcast television that is interested in improving his or her lighting knowledge and technique. You may be a trainee camera operator, a camera assistant, a multi-skilled technical operator requiring a broad base of lighting, or involved with under-graduate studies in media and production.

This course will provide delegates with the knowledge and confidence required to obtain quality pictures on professional camcorders, in studio and on location.

'Hands-on' practical workshops cover the following areas:

the essence of good portraiture
studio lighting equipment and method
location lighting equipment and method
understanding manual control of exposure, white balance and use of filters
risk assessment and professional safe working practice

Delegates will leave the course having gained a good level of lighting knowledge and method applicable to shooting in both studio and location environments.

ARRI have teamed up with two of the industries leading experts in lighting for film & TV.  Bill Curtis and Dave Lock have devised several lighting courses to pass on their wealth of knowledge and experience. ARRI is pleased to be able to provide the venue for these events in our new state of the art premises in Uxbridge and look forward to welcoming delegates attending these courses.
